Between the cryptocurrency industry and traditional finance, the real barrier has always been not technology but access to financial infrastructure. Whoever can access the banking clearing system is truly entering the core network of global capital flows.
Now, Kraken has taken a key step. Its banking division, Kraken Financial, has received approval from the Federal Reserve and obtained a Master Account. This means Kraken Financial becomes the first crypto institution to directly connect to the Federal Reserve’s core payment system.
In the past, crypto platforms handling USD funds usually relied on intermediary banks, and funds had to go through multiple banking networks to settle. With this Master Account, Kraken Financial can directly access Fedwire — one of the most critical interbank settlement systems in the U.S., processing over $4 trillion daily. This is equivalent to crypto institutions finally touching the underlying settlement network of traditional finance.
However, this approval grants limited Master Account privileges; Kraken Financial still cannot enjoy all central bank services, such as holding reserves to earn interest. The application was reviewed and approved by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, which also raised questions from the banking industry organization Bank Policy Institute, citing concerns over transparency in the approval process and risk control.
From an industry perspective, the significance of this event is not just short-term market impact but a systemic change. In the past, the crypto industry has been trying to integrate into the financial system rather than completely replace it. From banking licenses to payment system access, these changes are gradually connecting crypto infrastructure with traditional finance.
In my view, this is a very positive signal. The biggest structural risk in the crypto market has always been the fiat on-ramp. If banking partnerships are disrupted, business will be impacted. If more compliant institutions can directly access clearing systems in the future, the stability of capital inflows and outflows in crypto markets will significantly improve.
To some extent, this also hints at a new financial model: assets issued and traded on-chain, while fund clearing still occurs through the central bank system. As infrastructure begins to connect, the crypto industry is one step closer to truly entering mainstream finance.
