Artificial intelligence is operating a vehicle on Mars.

For the first time in the history of space exploration, NASA planned a driving route on the surface of Mars using the AI model Claude from Anthropic.

In December 2025, the Perseverance rover successfully completed two trips on Mars, totaling 456 meters, after AI analyzed orbital images and critical data collected over the years.

Afterward, the AI wrote navigation commands itself, reviewed and corrected them before execution to identify potential hazards such as sand traps or steep slopes, then optimized the route before final approval.

Of course, the AI did not operate without supervision; NASA tested the route through a “digital twin” that accurately simulates the rover before sending it to Mars, which reduced planning time by half and ensured the safety of equipment worth billions of dollars.

We are now at the beginning of an era where spacecraft can make autonomous decisions, especially on distant missions, because communication with Earth takes a long time, making any immediate decision from Earth impossible.
