According to Bloomberg, the Department of Finance received a notification on 12/8 last year, discovering that Chinese hackers were using a system vulnerability of BeyondTrust Corp., a software contractor cooperating with the US government, to launch attacks. The incident was subsequently reported to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) of the United States, with support from the FBI and other intelligence agencies, but still could not prevent the intrusion of Chinese hackers.

This attack was orchestrated by the Chinese hacking groups Silk Typhoon and UNC5221, not only affecting the computer of Finance Minister Yellen, but also the electronic devices of her deputies Wally Adeyemo and Brad Smith.

In addition to officials, over 400 laptops and desktop computers were hacked, along with nearly 3000 files, including law enforcement, foreign investment investigation, and national security intelligence.
