“Turn from defense to offense, All in AI!”
After 7 months of silence, Sun Zhengyi, who holds 5 trillion yen (about 35.3 billion U.S. dollars), returned to the stage.
As we all know, Masayoshi Son has always liked to present SoftBank’s grand vision to the world with PPTs with hundreds of pages and exaggerated pictures.
This time, the “PPT master” did not lose his usual standard, and prepared a PPT with exaggerated pictures, but “only” 34 pages, showing his determination to fight for AI supremacy.
Sun Zhengyi still reflected on the mistake of the Vision Fund’s deep loss and inextricability at the SoftBank Group shareholders meeting. But the billionaire struck a different tone when it came to AI and what it means:
“I am most interested in the AI revolution. I believe that humans will be surpassed by computers or AI. We want to be the leaders of the AI revolution!”
Sun Zhengyi also said that thanks to the “defensive mode” of keeping a low profile in the past three years, SoftBank has prepared as many as 5 trillion yen in ammunition reserves and is ready to switch to the “offensive mode”:
“For the past few years, we have focused on ‘defensive’. Three years ago, we didn’t have a lot of cash on hand. But since we have been in defensive mode, our cash on hand has increased to 5 trillion yen (about 35.3 billion yen) dollars). Now, we’re ready to move to offensive mode. I’m excited about that.”
The following is the main content of Sun Zhengyi’s speech PPT (full version PPT attached):
“AI: The Birth of Superman”
At the shareholder meeting, Masayoshi Son worked hard to communicate the importance he attaches to AI and his determination to work with it. He said he wanted to co-design the future with AI, adding that he had come up with more than 600 new inventions since last October.
Sun Zhengyi said that he communicates with AI every day, provides it with creative ideas, and hopes to be recognized. During the session, he described the process of ideation with ChatGPT. In this process, he proposes an idea to ChatGPT, gets feedback, and then communicates repeatedly until the AI is satisfied.
“After we repeated this process dozens of times, I really felt great because my idea was praised as feasible and brilliant,” Son said. He also added that after brainstorming with ChatGPT, his team is on call 24 hours a day to receive his ideas.
At the meeting that day, Masayoshi Son showed a slide titled “Evolution Speed” showing a graph of human evolution. From the birth of man to the agricultural revolution, the curve was completely flattened. Then, from the industrial revolution to the information revolution, the curve slowly moved up a bit (which is where we are today). But in his forecast for the next few years, the curve rises steeply, with a slope close to a vertical line (see Figure 1). As for the reason, it is clearly written on the slide:
“Artificial Intelligence: The Birth of Superman.”
Masayoshi Son’s speech went on to state that “artificial intelligence will solve problems that humans cannot solve”, accompanied by visual images of many problems facing humans, including car accidents, fires, and cordon (crime).
In the second half of his speech, Masayoshi Son showed a slide titled “Society Unhampered by Natural Disasters.” The image shows a city at night, but with the tops of buildings connected by arcing beams of light.
SoftBank calls its new business strategy “moving to offensive mode.” Son said at the meeting that offensive strategies include investing more in technology and developing new artificial intelligence technologies.
