The Chairman of the UK Security Committee calls for a temporary ban on political donations via cryptocurrency

Matt Western, Chair of the UK Joint Committee on National Security Strategy, calls on the government to temporarily suspend cryptocurrency donations to political parties due to concerns over foreign interference. In a letter to Steve Reed, he proposes adding a “suspension” clause to the Representation of the People Bill until the Electoral Commission issues official guidance.

Western warns that as the security environment worsens and the UK’s military role in Europe increases, the motives to influence the UK’s political stance may be stronger ahead of the upcoming elections. He also suggests banning funds from mixing services or anonymous sources, requiring parties to use only FCA-registered platforms and convert to fiat currency within 48 hours. Additionally, he calls for the establishment of a national police force dedicated to monitoring political finance.
