European Central Bank President (ECB) Christine Lagarde announced that the preparation phase for the digital euro has been completed and is awaiting approval from EU authorities, expected in 2026. The ECB expects that if the legislative process proceeds smoothly, the digital euro could be officially launched around 2029, with a pilot phase starting as early as 2027.

The project reflects Europe’s ambition to promote digital finance and modernize the payment system, while safeguarding the role of state-issued money in the digital age. The ECB emphasized that the digital euro will complement, not replace, cash, in order to maintain trust in the sovereign currency.

Financial experts see this as a significant step toward the EU’s digital economy future. Ms. Lagarde also affirmed that this initiative has strategic importance in protecting Europe’s monetary sovereignty against global financial trends.
