Scams are truly hard to defend against.
Just saw that Philadelphia musician G. Love downloaded a fake Ledger wallet app from the App Store, and during setup of the hardware wallet he was lured into entering a 24-word recovery phrase, resulting in 5.92 BTC being transferred away.
This musician said he has been mixing in the crypto space since 2017 and isn’t a newcomer. He downloaded the fake app because he had just switched to a new MacBook.
Be sure to know that, just like Google, the App Store also has many fake apps. So how can ordinary people protect themselves?
1. Before downloading an app, cross-verify it via the official website / official social media accounts.
2. When purchasing a hardware wallet, go through the official website. Previously, someone bought a hardware wallet that had a backdoor, and tens of millions were transferred away.
3. The recovery phrase for a hardware wallet can only be entered on the hardware side. Anything that asks you to enter the recovery phrase on your phone / computer is phishing.
