When Identity Is No Longer Data: A Personal Perspective on Midnight
There’s one thing I’ve realized when using current Web3 platforms: we’re still “sacrificing privacy” in exchange for convenience.
Every time we do KYC, upload documents, or share personal information… we’re placing trust in the system that this data won’t be leaked. But in reality, everyone knows — risks always exist.
And that’s why I find Midnight Network’s approach truly noteworthy.
Identity No Longer Needs to Be “Exposed”
Instead of sending your entire ID card, passport, or credentials, Midnight allows you to prove something about yourself without revealing the original data.
A very simple example:
You can prove you’re over 18 without providing your birthdate
You can confirm you have a degree/certification without uploading a file
What the system receives is just: “true” or “false” — nothing more.
The Technology Behind It: Zero-Knowledge Proofs
At the core of this model is Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP).
Simply put:
You prove you know a secret… without revealing what that secret is.
It may sound abstract, but when applied to identity, it’s extremely practical:
No need to store sensitive data
No creating “honeypots” for hackers
No more leaking databases of millions of people
How Will the Real-World Experience Change?
I believe the biggest strength isn’t just the technology, but the user experience:
No repeated KYC across platforms
Faster onboarding
Less friction when participating in DeFi, gaming, social
You only need one identity, and you can use it to prove everything — on your terms.
Power Back to Users
What I like most is the shift in “philosophy”:
Identity is no longer something you have to give out
But something you actively prove
It completely reverses the current model:
From “trust us with your data”
To “verify me without my data”
Why Is This Important?
In the context of increasingly strict data protection regulations (GDPR, data privacy laws…), Midnight’s approach is not only “technologically innovative” but also legally aligned and globally trending.
Businesses reduce risks of storing data
Users reduce the risk of information leaks
Systems still ensure compliance
Personal Perspective
I don’t think this is just a “feature.”
It’s a major shift in how the internet operates.
If Web2 is built on data collection, then Web3 — at least in Midnight’s direction — is moving toward minimizing trust.
And perhaps for the first time, “privacy” is no longer just a slogan. It becomes something usable every day. @MidnightNetwork #night $NIGHT
