(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held their first summit on Thursday, signaling a push for stronger “future-oriented” ties between the neighboring nations, local media reported.

The leaders met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Gyeongju, marking Takaichi’s first official visit to South Korea since becoming Japan’s first female prime minister earlier this month.

“Amid the rapidly changing international dynamics and trade environment, I think South Korea and Japan, neighboring countries that share many similarities, must strengthen future-oriented cooperation more than ever,” South Korean media quoted Lee as saying.

President Lee highlighted that the two countries face shared domestic and international challenges, stressing the importance of collaboration. “By sharing experiences and working together, I believe we can successfully address not only domestic issues but also international ones,” he added.

Prime Minister Takaichi described South Korea and Japan as “important neighbors” and reaffirmed her commitment to fostering a stable, forward-looking relationship, especially as this year marks the 60th anniversary of normalized diplomatic ties.

“Stable, future-oriented ties will benefit both Japan and S. Korea,” Japanese media quoted Takaichi as saying. She also suggested maintaining close communication and promoting reciprocal visits between the two nations.
