Ethereum’s co-creator Vitalik Buterin officially announced on the platform X that the Ethereum Foundation (EF) will undergo a significant structured reorganization over the next five years. This transformation has two fundamental objectives: to provide a resolute technical architecture that ensures Ethereum continues to operate as a high-performance, scalable “global computer,” while also preserving principles of resilience, sustainability, and decentralization; and secondly, to aim for the long-term sound governance of the Ethereum Foundation, maintaining its core philosophy.
Five-Year Open Technology Strategy
At the core of this plan, Buterin emphasized that the foundation will be personally led in managing issues overseen by its “pioneering projects.” His primary focus is on developing an open, verifiable, fully transparent software and hardware technology stack. This leadership will place particular importance on privacy preservation, decentralization, and user-centric architecture, covering various domains. These include operating systems, communication infrastructure, management tools, blockchain technologies, decentralized compute solutions, cryptography, and also biotechnological fields.
Vitalik’s Personal Commitment: Gradual Deployment of 16,384 ETH
To realize these missions, Buterin has withdrawn 16,384 ETH and plans to gradually invest in these projects over the coming years. Concurrently, research is underway into decentralized staking solutions to optimize staking yields in support of this long-term philosophy. Buterin strongly emphasized that an open and verifiable technological vision is an integral part of Ethereum’s philosophy.
Principle of Decentralization: Differentiating from Corporate Demands
The Ethereum Foundation will continue prioritizing core Ethereum development, while favoring “Ethereum for people in need” over “Ethereum everywhere.” This means ensuring the philosophy of self-sovereignty, data protection, and privacy, while avoiding serving centralized corporate governance requirements. Buterin noted that in a world increasingly controlled by power holders, building a truly open, verifiable, and user-serving decentralized public infrastructure through technology is an essential alternative. While this new orientation modernizes the Ethereum Foundation’s long-term mission, it does not diminish its commitment to transparency and openness amid major technological transformations.
