Vitalik himself has acknowledged that the original rollup vision “no longer makes sense.” This signals a brutal consolidation ahead:

Base – 2025 leader in TVL, users, and activity, profitable ~$55M
Arbitrum – stable, safe bet
Optimism/Superchain – strong ecosystem play

Most generic L2s — analysts predict a “Darwinian wipeout” as TVL collapses once incentives dry up; generic tokens without real revenue capture or specialization will likely become worthless
High-performers like MegaETH (parallel execution, real-time speed) may disrupt, but only differentiated L2s survive — privacy-focused (Aztec), exchange-backed (Base/Mantle), or ultra-fast niche solutions.
Bottom line: Ethereum wins in the long term with a stronger L1 and resilient L2 ecosystem. 2026 is the year of shakeout. Don’t bet on every L2 token — focus on those that deliver unique value beyond cheaper transactions.
