Spotify simplifies the path to video content monetization for creators

Spotify has taken a significant step towards democratizing access to the monetization program for podcasters, dramatically lowering entry barriers. The streaming platform now allows any creator to start monetizing their video productions with substantially more accessible criteria than in previous stages.

New Entry Thresholds: What Creators Need

To access the monetization program, podcasters must meet three fundamental requirements:

  • Have launched at least three episodes of content
  • Accumulate 2,000 total hours of audience interaction
  • Have 1,000 active viewers during the previous month

This represents a substantial reduction from the previous requirements, which demanded 12 published episodes, 10,000 hours of consumption, and 2,000 monthly unique listeners. The flexibility reflects Spotify’s strategy to encourage the creation of audiovisual content within its ecosystem.

Compensation Mechanism for Podcasters

Income comes from two complementary sources. On one hand, creators receive compensation directly linked to the number of premium subscribers viewing their videos. On the other hand, they participate in the distribution of advertising revenue generated by users of the platform’s free version.

Improved Sponsorship Tools Suite

Spotify is enhancing creators’ operational capabilities with new sponsorship features. Podcasters can now manage, schedule, and monitor narrated ads directly within their video content. These updates will be rolled out in April through two channels: the Spotify for Creators app and Megaphone, Spotify’s comprehensive podcast management and monetization platform.

Open API for Direct Integration

In its competitive push against YouTube, Spotify has launched an API that allows creators to upload and monetize podcast video content without leaving their usual work platforms. Services like Acast, Audioboom, Libsyn, Omny, and Podigee are already integrated, enabling a frictionless workflow.

Physical Expansion: New Studio in West Hollywood

The company will open a new production studio in West Hollywood dedicated to podcast and video creation, serving as an operational base for the Ringer network. This facility will join other spaces Spotify already operates in Los Angeles, New York, Stockholm, and London, offering access to select members of the partner program.

Evidence of Traction in Video Consumption

Since the activation of the partner program, video podcast consumption on Spotify has nearly doubled. The average user now watches twice as many video-format programs monthly as before the program’s implementation, although part of this growth could be attributed to increased promotion of audiovisual content within the app.
