Chainlink is further strengthening its operating systems to bridge the gap between traditional systems and blockchain ecosystems in the international financial sector. The company’s pilot project, conducted in partnership with SWIFT and UBS in 2025, enables reliable integration with tokenized assets.

The Role of Operating Systems and the ISO 20022 Standard

As an oracle platform, Chainlink is designed to support the most complex needs of financial institutions. First and foremost, the company has enhanced the security level of its operating systems—successfully complying with ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 1 standards. This step not only ensures secure data exchange but also meets the trust requirements of traditional financial systems.

Creating messages in accordance with the ISO 20022 standard is one of the main areas of development for Chainlink’s operating systems. This international standard facilitates the exchange of electronic data related to payments, securities, currency exchange, and other operations between financial institutions. Zach Tynes, a representative of the Chainlink team, highlighted a key distinction regarding compliance with the ISO 20022 standard: “There are no cryptocurrencies fully compliant with ISO 20022, but oracle platforms like Chainlink can fully support ISO 20022 messages.”

At the same time, Chainlink ensures that institutions can continue their trusted and established ISO 20022 processes without interruption. This additionally enhances the efficiency, transparency, and reliability of smart contracts and automated execution systems.

Successes of the SWIFT and UBS Pilot Project

The three-phase pilot project, launched at the beginning of 2025, eliminated the bottleneck between traditional financial systems and blockchain. In the first phase, Chainlink’s operating systems demonstrated structuring data using large language models (LLM), placing it on-chain as a “golden record.” Here, messages compliant with the ISO 20022 standard were delivered directly to subordinate financial institutions via the SWIFT network. Additionally, the system showcased the ability to process corporate actions in Spanish and Chinese languages.

In the second phase, Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE) was deployed to coordinate results from multiple AI models. Chainlink Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) then distributed verified records in real-time across various blockchain networks—DTCC, Avalanche, Hyperledger Besu, ZKSync, and others. This operating system enabled institutions to interact with tokenized assets across more than 60 blockchains.

In the third phase, support for complex corporate actions such as stock splits was expanded, and compliance with the ISO 20022 standard continued.

Market Size and Long-term Outlook

Chainlink has already provided over 18 billion on-chain verified data points, facilitating transactions worth trillions of dollars. Analysts forecast that the tokenized assets market will reach $16 trillion by 2030.

Meanwhile, SWIFT is adapting its MT message standards for securities to meet the new needs of the digital finance industry. Based on the SR 2025 standard, financial institutions will be able to embed triggers for smart contract execution, oracle-verified prices, and tokenized asset data directly into their message flows.

The development of Chainlink’s operating systems continues the movement toward ISO 20022 compliance for projects like Cardano (ADA), Hedera Hashgraph (HBAR), Algorand (ALGO), Ripple (XRP), and others. Together, these efforts strengthen the infrastructure capacity to unify the worlds of traditional finance and DeFi.
