Hard red wheat contracts demonstrated notable strength throughout Thursday’s trading session, with both spring and winter varieties posting solid gains across major futures exchanges. The uptick reflected underlying market fundamentals, particularly robust export demand figures.

Weekly export sales data released Thursday morning painted a bullish picture for American wheat. The week ending November 27 recorded 460,655 MT in wheat sales, positioning squarely within analyst expectations of 250,000-600,000 MT. This represented a considerable 27.4% surge compared to the previous week and 21.8% above the comparable period last year. Cumulative export commitments have now reached 18.94 MMT, equivalent to 696 million bushels—marking a 21.8% year-over-year increase that underscores sustained international demand.

Price action across the primary futures contracts reflected the constructive sales backdrop. Chicago SRW futures gained 1-2 cents, while Kansas City hard red winter contracts posted more pronounced strength, closing 9-10 cents higher. Minneapolis spring wheat showed the strongest performance, advancing 10-11 cents by session’s end.

On the global supply front, production forecasts suggest tighter markets ahead. The EU soft wheat crop is estimated at 128.3 MMT for 2026/27 according to Expana, representing an 8.5 MMT decline from the previous year if the estimate materializes. Meanwhile, Russian wheat production is projected at 83.8 MMT for 2026, per SovEcon assessments—unchanged from earlier forecasts but down 5 MMT year-over-year. These constraints on global supply underpin the current uptrend in US wheat prices as foreign buyers seek American supplies.

Contract-specific settlements reflected the broader strength: March CBOT wheat settled at $5.07 3/4 (up 1 1/2 cents), May CBOT at $5.18 3/4 (up 1 1/2 cents), March KCBT at $5.17 (up 9 1/4 cents), May KCBT at $5.29 1/4 (up 9 cents), March MGEX at $5.73 (up 11 cents), and May MGEX at $5.83 (up 10 1/2 cents).
