The Scalability Challenge that Ethereum Faces

When the Ethereum network gets congested, users face a tough choice: pay high fees or wait longer. This scalability issue has become critical as adoption grows. The Cancun upgrade brought with it EIP-4844 (Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844), an improvement proposal focused on solving this bottleneck through an innovative approach.

EIP-4844: What Changes with the Introduction of Blobs

EIP-4844, known as proto-danksharding, functions as a more efficient data transport system. The major difference lies in the introduction of a new type of transaction called blob-carrying transactions. Unlike conventional transactions, these carry special data structures called blobs.

Blobs are temporary units of information attached to the Ethereum blocks. Their most important characteristic is that they exist for only a limited period on the network and do not interact directly with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This allows large volumes of data to be processed without disrupting the central functioning of the network.

How Blobs Reduce Costs and Increase Speed

The mechanism is relatively straightforward: by separating transactional data into blobs that do not require permanent processing, EIP-4844 is able to significantly increase the amount of information per block. As indicated by protocol collaborators, this solution “couples blobs to blocks” in an optimized manner.

This architecture generates two immediate benefits for users:

1. Accelerated Speed: Transactions experience faster confirmation times as the system is not congested by the volume of data.

2. Cost Reduction: By making data transportation more efficient, transaction fees decrease considerably, democratizing access to the network.

Proto-Danksharding: A Step on the Path to Full Danksharding

EIP-4844 represents an intermediate step towards a more ambitious vision called danksharding. While proto-danksharding with blobs already offers substantial improvements, full danksharding promises to scale Ethereum to process an even greater volume of transactions while maintaining security and decentralization.

This phased design allows the Ethereum community to test and optimize blob technology before implementing even more complex solutions.

The Practical Impact on the Ecosystem

With the activation of EIP-4844 in the Cancun upgrade, the Ethereum ecosystem has become more accessible. Decentralized applications, NFT markets, and DeFi platforms now operate with reduced costs. This efficiency improvement positions Ethereum as a more competitive network for applications that require high throughput and low fees.
