Here’s what’s actually happening inside spent nuclear fuel: when uranium undergoes fission, it doesn’t just create waste—it generates a treasure trove of highly valuable isotopes. We’re talking rare precious metals like rhodium and palladium (essential for catalytic converters in catalytic reactor systems), plus specialized isotopes like krypton-85 and americium-241 used in cutting-edge electronics and smoke detectors. Globally, the world has approximately 400,000 tons of spent fuel, with only a third reprocessed.

The U.S. currently depends heavily on Russian uranium enrichment, a strategic vulnerability. But there’s a hidden solution buried in those radioactive dumps.

The Technology: Clean Chemistry Meets Electrochemistry

Curio’s breakthrough is elegantly simple in principle but revolutionary in practice. Instead of the old, messy, dangerous nitric acid recycling methods that created more radioactive contamination, they use a dry electrochemical and pyroprocessing system. Think of it as precisely separating metals using heat, chemical reactions, and electric currents—exploiting the fact that different isotopes and fission products have different boiling points, weights, and electrical properties.

The result? Pristine, separated elements: uranium ready for reactor fuel, plutonium suitable for next-generation reactor designs, and valuable byproducts like rhodium, palladium, cesium, strontium, and americium. A single Curio facility could theoretically extract enough uranium to supply approximately one-third of the entire United States’ annual nuclear fuel feedstock.

The Real Game-Changer: Solving Two Crises at Once

Here’s where it gets genuinely transformative. This reprocessing collapses the radioactive decay timeline from 10,000 years down to just a few hundred years. That’s not just a number game—it fundamentally changes the political and practical calculus for nuclear waste storage. Finding safe storage locations for material that’s “only” dangerous for centuries versus millennia is exponentially easier.

Meanwhile, with AI’s explosive energy demands pushing major tech companies to hunt for carbon-neutral power sources, suddenly that 97 gigawatts from America’s 94 commercial nuclear reactors doesn’t look like enough. Recycled fuel from waste becomes the missing piece.

The Timeline and the Prize

The Department of Energy is funding a three-year demonstration contract at a national lab, expected to wrap by next year. If successful, a commercial-scale facility could emerge within three to five years. Curio estimates its processing could alone satisfy 10% of global rhodium demand—just from U.S. waste.
