The competition for the next Federal Reserve Chair is becoming increasingly fierce.

Recently, Trump personally interviewed Fed Governor Waller, discussing core issues such as employment and interest rates on the spot. After this conversation was exposed, Waller directly stated that inflation has already fallen back, and the Fed may cut interest rates by 50-100 basis points next. These remarks immediately put him in the spotlight as a top candidate.

At the same time, BlackRock executive Reed is also scheduled for an interview at Mar-a-Lago, while the previously highly regarded Bowman has already been confirmed out. Heavyweights like Hasset and Wosh are also on Trump's inspection list, but he has not yet decided who to choose. The suspense is truly high.

The interview day was particularly formal, with the Treasury Secretary and senior White House officials in attendance. Trump publicly praised Waller as "highly qualified and well-coordinated," and even mentioned that he can bench press 350 pounds, implying that this "hardcore" trait adds points.

Interestingly, although Trump said he does not consider political stance when choosing, he has been emphasizing the need for a Fed Chair who advocates significant rate cuts, even promising that doing so would greatly reduce mortgage rates. Whether this is a genuine consideration for the economy or an attempt to exert greater influence on policy remains debated.

Who will ultimately get the job remains a mystery. But the outcome of this "central bank contest" will undoubtedly influence global financial markets.

ngl, this whole fed chair circus is just governance theater at the macro level... empirically speaking, whoever gets picked will hinge entirely on rate cut signals, not political theater. the data suggests markets are already pricing in the 50-100bp drop regardless of who sits in the chair 🤓
