Synthetix returns to Ethereum: The underlying logic behind the retreat from Layer-2

Abstract generation in progress

【Crypto World】A major shift by Synthetix has attracted a lot of attention—they have decided to abandon their Layer-2 solution and return to the Ethereum mainnet. There’s an interesting story behind this choice: Ethereum’s transaction fees have decreased 26-fold over the past year, making the mainnet a feasible place to run high-frequency applications like perpetual futures DEXs again.

The protocol’s V3 version is currently in trial operation, open only to top traders and liquidity providers verified through whitelisting. Their strategy is clear—prioritize security over rushing to accumulate total locked value. This steady and cautious approach allows development efforts to focus on Ethereum, a secure and highly liquid foundational layer.

Interestingly, this example might inspire other protocols that previously fled Ethereum due to high costs. As network efficiency improves and fees are optimized, the mainnet’s attractiveness is indeed on the rise.

It only took a 26-fold decrease in costs to come back. Why didn't you do it earlier? Truly, you go where it's cheapest.

A 26-fold decrease in fees just to return to Ethereum? This move is a bit realistic.

Fees have dropped 26 times, and this Ethereum rebound is really happening. SNX's return is also not surprising. The mainnet liquidity is strong, honestly much better than the false prosperity of those L2s. The whitelist system is quite clever; it's better to do it slowly than to rush online. This is the right attitude. Have you looked into other projects? Stop messing around with L2s; the mainnet is the ultimate answer. V3 is still in trial operation but has already attracted so much attention. Once it goes live, it’s bound to take off.

Cost decreased by 26 times. Over the past three years, Ethereum has indeed been transforming. Our initial dream of "L2 Savior" now seems a bit naive. Synthetix's approach is steady—no rush to boost TVL numbers. First, ensure security and liquidity are in place. That's the right rhythm. History will prove that those who escape from Ethereum will ultimately have to come back. Protocols still holding on in L2, this must be a bit awkward now, haha.

The fee has decreased by 26 times, this is really amazing. I should have known earlier and not moved to L2, haha.

The 26-fold reduction in fees is indeed impressive; no wonder everyone is flowing back to the mainnet. --- Honestly, I believe this move to return to the mainnet is more reliable than those projects blindly deploying layer2 solutions. --- Implementing a whitelist system is definitely more solid than mindlessly opening up and burning money. --- Wait, aren't the projects that previously moved to L2 now feeling awkward? Haha. --- The key issue is still the fees; once that's solved, everything else is just superficial. --- Synthetix's strategy is pretty good; a steady approach with progress feels right. --- The security of the mainnet is indeed hard to demonstrate; talking more about other layer2 solutions is pointless. --- Suddenly, I remember how many projects hyped up L2 back then, now they’re silent. --- The eventual migration of liquidity to the mainnet is inevitable; the ecosystem effects are evident. --- I'm curious to see if other DEXs will follow the trend; this might be a signal.
