According to Mars Finance, on November 7, TSL CEO Elon Musk announced at the annual shareholder meeting that the official release of the new generation Roadster electric supercar will be postponed to April 1, 2026, with mass production pushed back to 12 to 18 months later, and deliveries expected as early as 2027 and possibly as late as 2028. This means that the mass production timeline for this model has been delayed by nearly ten years since its first appearance in 2017. Musk chose April Fools' Day as the release date, stating, “This way, if it gets delayed again, I can still say I was joking.” This decision again casts a shadow over the long development process of the vehicle; previously, he had promised during an interview on the Joe Rogan podcast that there would be a “memorable showcase” by the end of 2025. According to Musk, the mass production version of the Roadster will be “vastly different” from the prototype shown in 2017, and the new car may feature a cold gas propulsion system developed by SpaceX, allowing for hovering and even brief flight capabilities. Insiders have revealed that the latest design includes a two-seater layout with butterfly doors, distinguishing it from the original four-seater version. The lengthy delays have left some pre-order customers dissatisfied. Since 2017, many users have paid deposits ranging from $50,000 to $250,000. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently publicly requested a refund on social media, claiming that his emails were bounced back. Musk responded by stating that “refunds have been processed within 24 hours” and quipped, “This is very much in line with your character.” Tech blogger Marques Brownlee also canceled his pre-order in September 2025, calling the refund process “extremely cumbersome.” According to TSL's financial report, these deposits are listed on the books as “interest-free customer loans,” with the longest freeze time reaching eight years.
