BTFS 4.0 launches Storage Providers (SPs) to boost network efficiency and service quality, requiring higher technical standards and integration with the BTTC network.

BitTorrent’s latest update, BTFS 4.0, has introduced a new role known as Storage Providers (SPs) aimed at enhancing the efficiency and service quality of the BitTorrent File System (BTFS) network. According to BitTorrent Inc., SPs are expected to meet higher technical standards and provide greater reliability, ultimately contributing to a more robust decentralized storage network.

Role and Requirements of Storage Providers

Storage Providers are high-performance nodes that must adhere to stringent hardware, service stability, and availability standards. These nodes are tasked with ensuring the BTFS network remains highly available and trustworthy. Unlike traditional BTFS nodes, SP nodes are required to undergo a rigorous setup process and maintain higher technical capabilities.

To qualify as an SP, applicants must first become a validator on the BTTC network. This step is crucial as it helps integrate the BTTC ecosystem while reinforcing the network’s security and stability. Validators play a vital role in the consensus process and provide critical infrastructure support to BTFS.

Steps to Become a Storage Provider

The process of becoming a Storage Provider involves three main steps. First, one must become a BTTC Validator, which involves confirming identity and stake to participate in network consensus and secure on-chain transactions. The next step involves deploying a BTFS SP node, adhering to specific hardware and service-level requirements. These include a CPU with at least 16 cores, 64 GB RAM, high-speed SSD storage over 1 PB, and a stable network connection with specified upload and download speeds.

Finally, applicants need to submit an SP application through the BTFS proposal page. The application requires details such as the Storage Provider’s name, node ID, and address, along with the Validator’s name and address. Approval from the BTFS team is necessary to become a recognized SP.

Running an Open Node

BTFS remains committed to its decentralized philosophy by supporting open-source operations. Developers and tech enthusiasts can deploy and run open nodes with minimal hardware requirements. Unlike SPs, open node operators do not need to meet the rigorous prerequisites; however, they are currently not eligible for BTFS airdrop incentives.

About BTFS

The BitTorrent File System is a decentralized protocol and web application designed for storing and sharing digital content. It serves as a foundational platform for decentralized applications (Dapps). The BTFS team continues to refine network operations and market sentiment, making dynamic adjustments such as altering upload prices and airdrop reward schemes.
