The White House releases "Pokémon MAGA" meme, sparking controversy; Pokémon Company responds with a counterattack
Pikachu has once again been pulled into the whirlpool of American politics, and this time the “uninvited guest” is still the White House. On Thursday local time, the White House posted a meme reading “MAGA” (“Let America Be Great Again”) on its social media account, using the iconic colorful font from Pokémon’s game released that day. Well-known IP characters such as Pikachu and Magikarp are also vividly shown. This move quickly triggered a counterattack from Pokémon. A Pokémon International spokesperson, Sravanti Dev, issued a statement saying: “We have noticed some recent social media content containing images related to our brand. The creation or distribution of this content is not connected to us, and we have never authorized anyone to use our intellectual property. Our mission is to connect the world with one another, and this mission is not affiliated with any political stance or agenda.”
