Recently, another large sum of funds has "mysteriously vanished"—the 50 million USDT withdrawn from a top-tier exchange was simply sent to a phishing wallet. Once the details emerged, it was truly frightening.

Here's what happened:

After the victim withdrew 50 million USDT from a major exchange, they prudently transferred 50 USDT first to test the address. This step was correct, but the problem occurred in the next step—during the official transfer, they copied an address directly from the "Recent Transactions" history. They thought it was the same address they tested earlier, but little did they know... the phishing scammers had already laid an ambush.

How ruthless is the phishing method?

The phishing gang generated a fake address with the first and last three characters identical, and even transferred 0.005 USDT to the victim. At this point, the victim was completely unable to distinguish which address was real and which was fake, so they copied from the recent records—and it turned out to be the phishing address. That’s how 50 million USDT was lost.

Even more astonishing, the scammers weren’t greedy and didn’t immediately sell the USDT (which would have made it easier to freeze). Instead, they quickly exchanged it for DAI, then swept all into 16,624 ETH. These ETH were then thoroughly washed through a mixing tool (Tornado Cash), making it impossible to trace back.
