Romania is using blockchain to count votes in today’s presidential election
The Permanent Electoral Organization of Romania (ROAP-Romania Autoritatea Electoral〈Permanent〉) is using #blockchain technology to count and verify votes in the September 11-24 presidential election.
Ovidiu Damian, a Romanian blockchain developer from Pi Squared, announced the news this morning on The X website. Romania is accidentally using #blockchain technology to ensure the integrity of elections, Damian shared the link and joked that it’s probably nonsense. So people around the world can track transactions in a public registry that appears on the official ROAP website dashboard. So far, 83859 blocks with cryptographically verified votes have already been added to the blockchain.

Romania’s Special Telecommunications Service (STS-Serviciul de Telecomunicaii Speciale, Romania) has also signed an agreement to create a website in conjunction with election authorities. According to STS, the utilizes the European Blockchain Service Infrastructure (EBSI), which consists of nodes located in 27 European countries.
This state-of-the-art technical solution aims to increase the stability of Romania’s electoral by ensuring traceability and increasing confidence in the integrity of data. In addition, the digital fingerprint of this data will be protected for the first time in the European Blockchain Service Infrastructure (EBSI) blockchain network developed by the European Commission, providing an additional level of security and traceability.
