Tensions between the U.S. and Iran are not only escalating on the military front, but conflicts in cyberspace are also intensifying. According to a report by Reuters on the 27th, a hacker group associated with Iran, the “Handala Hack Team,” openly claims that they have successfully hacked into the private email account of FBI Director Kash Patel. The group boasted on its website that Patel’s name has now been added to their “list of successfully hacked victims.”

Emails from 2010 to 2019 leaked, U.S. Department of Justice confirms

To prove the authenticity of the attack, the hackers published Patel’s photo along with what they claim is his personal resume online. Although Reuters stated it could not immediately verify all of the released emails, an initial review of the samples uploaded by the hackers revealed that the leaked information includes private and work correspondence from 2010 to 2019.

Regarding this cyber attack that raises national security concerns, a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) official has confirmed to Reuters that Patel’s email was indeed compromised, but declined to provide further details. As of now, the FBI has not issued an official comment on the incident. Amid ongoing U.S.-Iran hostilities, this hacking incident targeting a senior U.S. intelligence official could further exacerbate geopolitical risks between the two countries.
