Walrus Protocol's technological iterations have never stopped. In July this year, the protocol launched Quilt, a dedicated solution for small file storage, directly addressing a pain point for many developers.
How powerful is this solution? The data speaks for itself. Storage costs for 100KB files have been reduced by a full 106 times; for 10KB files, the reduction is even more dramatic—420 times. What does this mean? Gas fees on the SUI network have also dropped significantly. For applications that need to process small files frequently, the cost optimization can be enough to change their business models.
The core logic of Quilt is straightforward—pack and group multiple small files, turning small into large for storage. It sounds simple, but the engineering behind it is not easy.
Looking ahead, the protocol team has bigger ambitions. They plan to continue researching more efficient encoding and decoding algorithms, support more complex data types, and even collaborate with other public chains to achieve cross-chain interoperability. These actions point in the same direction—building the WAL ecosystem into the most reliable storage infrastructure in Web3. Once these plans are implemented, developers' space for innovation will be greatly expanded, and the entire Web3 ecosystem will usher in a new pace of development.
