  • Interest payments on e-CNY aim to attract depositors
  • Potential reduction in U.S. Treasury competition

PBOC to Allow Interest on e-CNY from 2025

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) announced allowing banks to offer interest on e-CNY holdings starting in 2025. This strategic change aims to enhance the digital yuan’s competitiveness against other assets. By introducing interest payments on e-CNY, the PBOC intends to boost adoption and create a more attractive option for savers. The decision follows two years of successful e-CNY pilots.

e-CNY Interest Policy Attracts Savers and Institutions

This policy is expected to attract individuals and institutions seeking interest-yielding digital assets. It represents a shift in strategies to make e-CNY more viable in the financial ecosystem. The introduction of interest on digital yuan could have financial implications, potentially reducing reliance on USD-denominated assets, thereby reshaping China’s economic positioning.

First Interest-Bearing CBDC in Digital Currency History

The introduction of interest-bearing CBDCs marks a first in the digital currency landscape, with no previous examples of interest-bearing CBDCs reported to date. Experts suggest that while the e-CNY could face challenges in adoption, offering interest might prompt broader usage, reshaping financial strategies of individuals and institutions.

Oh my, the central bank has started playing with interest rates? Are they copying our DeFi projects or really trying to kill US bonds? --- Sounds good, but the question is, where does the interest come from? Printing money out of thin air? --- The first interest-bearing CBDC? Haha, basically the central bank is also adopting "fundraising" thinking, relying on interest to attract depositors. This signal is quite shocking. --- Reducing dependence on US bonds is real, but this trick... feels like they're opening a new way to cut the leeks. --- E-CNY earning interest? I'll just see how much can be attracted this time, and how to cash out later. --- The first interest-bearing CBDC in history sounds high-end, but essentially it's still a "come deposit money" routine, nothing new. --- This operation actually says one thing: the country can't sit still anymore, it needs interest to control liquidity. The market is really changing.

technically speaking, if you actually analyze the monetary mechanics here... e-cny with yield is just central bank trying to compete with defi, but the execution is demonstrably inferior. no transparency on how they're calculating those interest rates lol

Wow, digital renminbi with interest? If this really comes to fruition, it depends on the interest rate offered; otherwise, it's still not attractive.
