Tokens now have a Chinese name—词元 (word units).

At the 2026 Annual Conference of the China Development High-Level Forum held on the 23rd, Liu Liehong, Director of the National Data Administration, provided a clear positioning: Token “lexemes” are not only value anchors for the intelligent era, but also the “settlement unit” that connects technology supply and business demand, providing quantifiable possibilities for implementing business models. This also, from an official standpoint, gives Token its translation: “lexemes.” As a popular new term in the tech community, what exactly are lexemes? What does an increase in lexeme usage mean? One article to explain. China’s daily average lexeme calls exceed 140 trillion. At the forum, Liu Liehong also disclosed a jaw-dropping set of figures: as of the end of 2025, the country has already built more than 100,000 high-quality datasets. By this March, the country’s daily average Token (lexeme) usage has already exceeded 140 trillion; compared with 100 billion at the beginning of 2024, it has grown by more than 1,000 times, and compared with 100 trillion at the end of 2025, in just three months it has grown by more than 40%.
