Colombian Military Aircraft Crashes, Death Toll Rises to 66
A Colombian Air Force transport plane crashed on Monday in Putumayo Province in the southwest of the country. Colombian military officials told local media on Tuesday that the death toll has risen to 66.
The Colombian military said that, according to the latest statistics, there were a total of 128 people on board. In addition to the 66 fatalities, 57 people were injured, 4 are missing, and 1 was unharmed.
The Colombian Air Force commander stated on social media that a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft was flying from Leticia Port to Asis Port at the time of the incident, carrying Colombian Army soldiers. It is currently confirmed that the aircraft experienced a malfunction shortly after takeoff and crashed about two kilometers from the airport.
Local media reported that the aircraft crashed a few minutes after takeoff. Online videos show a large plume of gray smoke at the scene, with wreckage scattered everywhere.
The aircraft involved was manufactured by Lockheed Martin. A spokesperson for Lockheed Martin said the company will assist Colombia in investigating the incident.
