US Treasury Secretary: Reports That Trump "Threatened to Delay China Visit Due to Hormuz Strait Escort Dispute" Are False

U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen on the 16th stated that the false report claiming Trump “delayed his visit to China due to the escort mission in the Strait of Hormuz” is untrue. Previously, the British media Financial Times was the first to report related news.

On March 16th, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin held a routine press conference. When asked by foreign media about Trump’s visit to China, Wang Wenbin said, “Diplomatic exchanges between heads of state play an irreplaceable strategic leading role in China-U.S. relations. Both sides are maintaining communication regarding President Trump’s visit to China.”

On March 16th, Treasury Secretary Yellen told CNBC that if President Trump’s meeting with Chinese leaders is postponed, it is not because Trump requested China to ensure the safety of the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane. The reports are completely false. If the meeting is rescheduled, it would be due to logistical reasons; President Trump wishes to stay in Washington to coordinate war efforts. During such times, traveling might not be the best choice.

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Trump looks forward to visiting China, and the date might be adjusted. Her current top priority is to ensure the continued success of the “Epic Fury” operation. She does not believe the visit will be canceled, but it is very likely to be delayed.

Regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin repeatedly responded that recent tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters have disrupted international cargo and energy trade routes, undermining regional and global peace and stability. China once again calls on all parties to immediately cease military actions, avoid further escalation of tensions, prevent regional instability, and minimize impacts on global economic development.
