Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced on March 9th local time that the Canadian government has completed further review of the TikTok Canada investment case and has decided to allow the investment to proceed. However, TikTok must adhere to a series of legally binding new commitments, including strengthening protections for Canadian users’ personal information and minors. The Canadian government stated that this decision will protect Canadian jobs and ensure TikTok maintains a physical presence in Canada. A TikTok spokesperson said in a statement, “We look forward to investing in new and returning projects to support a thriving ecosystem for Canadian creators, artists, and small businesses.” (Jiemian News)
