President Trump on Thursday reiterated his support for the Department of Justice’s investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell—an stance that could further delay the confirmation process for his potential successor, Kevin Wirth.

Talking about Powell in the Oval Office, Trump said, “He’s under investigation because he’s building a building that costs billions of dollars over budget.”

He was referring to the ongoing renovation of the Federal Reserve’s Washington headquarters, which is reportedly the focus of a federal criminal investigation led by U.S. Attorney Jenny Piro targeting the central bank chairman.
