Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Lam Suk-yee, attended an international table tennis event and stated that this year is the Asian Games year. She hopes to host more national, Asian, or international competitions in Hong Kong. On one hand, this will help Hong Kong athletes preparing for the Asian Games to have home-ground training opportunities and strive for good results; on the other hand, it will attract more young people and young athletes to join the elite sports ranks. At the same time, major sporting events will attract more visitors to Hong Kong and encourage them to stay.

Lam Suk-yee pointed out that it is expected that 53.8 million travelers will visit Hong Kong this year. The authorities will continue to promote longer stays for overnight visitors. Although there is ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Hong Kong remains a very safe place with a variety of activities, including sports and cultural events. There will also be many concerts in the future. She is confident that these will attract tourists, especially overnight visitors.

Regarding reservations and management of country parks, Lam Suk-yee said she will fully cooperate with the Environment and Ecology Bureau’s efforts, including providing more real-time information so travelers know the situation at attractions. If there are too many visitors, for a better travel experience, they can consider traveling off-peak, as Golden Week usually lasts several days, and there are times to choose from.

Regarding new sports projects, she mentioned that the government has funding programs for some local sports activities with international participation. These may not yet meet the “M” brand program level, but support will be provided through funding. She hopes to generate interest in new activities; after citizens watch high-level athletes compete, they may feel they can participate themselves, which will also help elite athletes.
