The number of people returning to the private equity industry after "going solo" in 2025 has hit a near-decade low.

Abstract generation in progress

As of March 21, according to Private Equity Ranking Network statistics, the number of private equity professionals who left their jobs and then rejoined within the same year from 2021 to 2025 decreased from 1,112 to 184. The 2025 data is the lowest in nearly a decade, with even fewer founders starting their own private equity firms. On one hand, this is due to increased registration thresholds and compliance costs for private equity; on the other hand, the number of private equity managers in the industry continues to decline, leading to a shrinking supply of quality positions, and many professionals prefer stability.

According to incomplete statistics, as of the end of February 2026, 78 individuals who previously worked at private equity firms with over 10 billion yuan in assets have since founded their own private equity firms.
