Former US Vice President Dick Cheney Passes Away

(MENAFN) Former United States Vice President Dick Cheney has passed away due to complications related to pneumonia and heart and vascular disease, according to a statement released by his family on Tuesday.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old,” the statement reads.

“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed.

The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.”

Cheney served as Vice President under former President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and played a central role in shaping US foreign policy during that time.

He was one of the main architects behind the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq and was a fervent supporter of the claim that then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein held weapons of mass destruction, a claim later discredited.

He was also a strong proponent of the broader “war on terror,” sanctioned the use of torture against terrorism suspects, and authorized the warrantless surveillance of Americans’ phone calls and emails.

These decisions made him a highly controversial figure both domestically and internationally.

Cheney left office with historically low approval ratings for a US vice president, according to major US pollsters, yet he remained unapologetic about his choices.

He maintained that his actions were necessary in the wake of the September 11 attacks, which resulted in nearly 2,800 deaths.

“I would do it again in a minute,” he said in 2014, addressing a Senate report that criticized the CIA’s interrogation methods as brutal, ineffective, and damaging to America’s reputation abroad.
