(MENAFN) Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani met in Baghdad with US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack on Sunday to discuss measures to prevent escalation in the region and the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes.

The discussions focused on bilateral relations between Iraq and the US, as well as Iraq’s role in promoting stability in Syria and the wider region. The two officials also addressed the recent transfer of more than 5,700 ISIS (Daesh) detainees from northeastern Syria to Iraqi custody, completed by US Central Command after a 23-day operation.

Both sides emphasized the need to use diplomatic channels to prevent conflict and highlighted opportunities for economic cooperation to support long-term stability. Sudani underscored the importance of addressing systemic regional problems through fundamental solutions while protecting sovereignty, and Barrack praised Iraq’s contributions to reducing tensions, supporting dialogue, and combating terrorism.
