Co-founder of Ethereum has developed a revolutionary concept aimed at returning the network to its ideological roots while simultaneously modernizing its technical infrastructure. The plan involves a gradual evolution of the platform, incorporating principles of encryption, privacy, and censorship resistance that defined the cyberpunk movement of the 1980s and 1990s.
The creator believes that the time for such a transformation has come. His vision does not call for a radical overhaul of the network but rather a subtle integration of new components into the existing ecosystem — similar to how Ethereum successfully transitioned to a proof-of-stake mechanism during The Merge, one of the most significant upgrades in blockchain history.
Buterin outlined four main directions for network improvement
Based on an expanded analysis of the architecture, key changes have been identified that could ensure the next phase of platform development:
Redesign of the state structure — simplifying data storage and verification mechanisms, reducing computational load on network nodes.
Optimization of consensus mechanisms — increasing efficiency and reducing energy consumption, adapting to future technologies.

The author of the concept suggests that within five years, especially with the development of artificial intelligence and formal code verification, Ethereum could transition to a new, more principled architecture if necessary.
How Buterin’s strategy balances ideology and practicality
The proposal reflects a deeper dilemma in the development of decentralized systems: the need to adhere to core principles without sacrificing usability. Bitcoin has remained true to minimalist ideals of digital money, while Ethereum has evolved into a vast ecosystem of decentralized finance, NFTs, and tokenized assets.
The founder’s vision envisions returning to the core principles of privacy and censorship resistance without sacrificing developer flexibility and interoperability. This means establishing new privacy protection standards at the protocol level without disrupting existing applications.
