SHPGX Overview: On March 12, China National Petroleum Corporation’s Tarim Oilfield officially received approval from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Development and Reform Commission for the “Aksu Shaya County Fuman District Photovoltaic Green Power Direct Connection Project.” This project is China National Petroleum’s first approved green power direct connection project, marking a milestone in the integration of new energy and traditional oil and gas industries at Tarim Oilfield.

On March 12, China National Petroleum’s Tarim Oilfield officially received approval from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Development and Reform Commission for the “Aksu Shaya County Fuman District Photovoltaic Green Power Direct Connection Project.” This project is China National Petroleum’s first approved green power direct connection project, signifying a significant step forward in the fusion of renewable energy and conventional oil and gas sectors at Tarim Oilfield.

Located in the Taklamakan Desert south of Shaya County in Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang, this green power direct connection project integrates “source-grid-load-storage” into a comprehensive green energy system. On the power consumption side, the main user is the Fuman Oilfield, China’s largest ultra-deep oilfield with an annual oil and gas production exceeding 4.6 million tons. On the power supply side, it involves the upcoming construction of a 100,000-kilowatt photovoltaic project to increase oil and gas production and promote green energy at Tarim Oilfield. According to the plan, the project will build a 100 MW photovoltaic power station as the source of green electricity. To ensure stable power supply and reduce light wastage, an additional 20 MW / 80 MWh energy storage station will be added, serving as a super “charger” to effectively smooth out photovoltaic fluctuations and guarantee continuous power supply. Connecting the power source and the load is a planned 2.5 km direct connection transmission line and a 110 kV substation. Based on the annual maximum generation capacity of 157 million kWh from the 100 MW photovoltaic station, the green power application at Fuman Oilfield could reach 35.7%, equivalent to replacing approximately 47,300 tons of standard coal and reducing CO₂ emissions by about 122,900 tons.

Once completed, the project will enable precise integration of new energy generation with oil and gas production, enhancing transparency and traceability of green power sources, and making product carbon footprint accounting more accurate and credible. It will also promote local consumption of renewable energy, effectively easing grid transmission pressure, and ensuring that green photovoltaic resources are truly “produced and used,” effectively creating a “green dedicated line” for energy-consuming enterprises.

The approval of the green power direct connection project will establish a closed-loop system of “oil and gas production + green power supply,” deeply integrating renewable energy production with green energy use. This will significantly promote large-scale development of new energy, reduce energy costs for energy producers, and provide replicable and scalable experience for the construction of green power direct connection projects in traditional oil and gas enterprises.

“Not only does this change the power supply model, but it also deeply aligns the demand for green low-carbon transformation in the traditional oil and gas industry with new energy supply, exploring a new point-to-point pathway to solve renewable energy absorption issues and promote green low-carbon transformation of the energy industry,” said Lei Ting, Executive Director and Party Secretary of the New Energy Division at Tarim Oilfield.

Currently, Tarim Oilfield is accelerating the preparation work for the green power direct connection project, striving to complete construction and enable direct power supply as soon as possible, injecting new momentum into solving renewable energy absorption issues and the green low-carbon transformation of “oil and electricity integration.”
