U.S. stock futures continued to weaken Thursday during Asian trading hours, with Dow futures down 10 points at 46,525; S&P 500 futures down 4 points at 6,672; and Nasdaq futures down 43 points, nearly 0.2%, at 24,608. The United States will release the March Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index, last week’s initial unemployment claims, and January new home sales data.

Wednesday: Dow drops 768 points to a low this year — Powell: Rising energy prices boost inflation expectations
The Federal Reserve holds steady, expects one rate cut this year and next; Middle East conflict has pushed oil prices up nearly 50% this month. Powell emphasizes that if inflation shows no signs of progress, rate hikes will not be considered. He expects energy price increases to raise overall inflation expectations, with the most important task now being to reduce commodity inflation. After Powell’s remarks, the Dow plunged nearly 800 points.
The Dow closed down 768 points at 46,225; S&P 500 fell 1.36%; Nasdaq declined 1.46%.

NYMEX crude oil fell as much as 4.4%, then rebounded 3.33%, closing at $96.32, up 0.11%; Brent crude settled at $107.38, up 3.8%.
Powell held a press conference after the FOMC meeting, stating that if a new Fed chair is not confirmed by the end of his term in May, he will serve as interim chair.
Economic data showed U.S. February PPI up 3.4% YoY, above expectations of 3% and previous 2.9%; MoM up 0.7%, above 0.5%. Core PPI rose 3.9% YoY, above 3.7% expected and 3.6% in January; MoM up 0.5%, above 0.3% forecast.
Nuveen notes that recent geopolitical shocks have led markets to reassess the risks of tightening monetary policy, but considers such adjustments premature. They highlight that inflation remains a focus, but rising energy prices often lead to negative growth impacts. With inflation near target levels in many developed markets and economic growth slowing, policymakers may adopt a wait-and-see approach rather than resuming rate hikes.
The firm believes that today’s inflation environment differs significantly from the post-pandemic period when aggressive tightening was necessary. While commodity prices may temporarily boost inflation, their overall impact is complex: rising energy costs can suppress real income and demand. Therefore, oil shocks are more likely to delay disinflation rather than reignite a sustained inflation cycle.

Foreign media PBS reports Trump said Iran is not yet ready for a deal, and predicted that once the war ends, oil prices will fall rapidly like a rolling stone, believing the conflict won’t last long. He also stated that Iran has extensive infrastructure in Tehran that could be destroyed within an hour, but doing so would require years of rebuilding and cause trauma, so he prefers to avoid it. He also mentioned he does not want to damage pipelines in the strategic Halek Island oil hub, as destruction would take years to reconnect.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen told CNBC that the U.S. does not mind some Iranian, Indian, and Chinese ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, considering Iran’s allowing passage as a natural opening, and hopes global oil supply remains sufficient. She added that any measures to ease oil prices depend on the duration of the Iran conflict.
Key stocks: NVIDIA (NVDA) rose 2.6%, closing at $184.93, with Huang Renxun speaking at GTC. Data center company Nebius (NBIS) surged 15.4%, announcing it will provide Meta with $12 billion of dedicated computing capacity starting early 2027, with Meta pledging up to $15 billion more.
