Decentraland, the decentralized virtual reality platform, was created by two visionaries in the crypto ecosystem: Ariel Meilich and Esteban Ordano. Although both stepped down from their executive roles in the project, they remain involved as strategic advisors, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to the platform they helped build.

Ariel Meilich: From Serial Entrepreneur to Decentraland Leader

Ariel Meilich led Decentraland as project leader from 2017 to 2020, playing a key role in the early development of the platform. His entrepreneurial background positions him as a versatile founder: he started multiple startups, including an online translation services agency and an innovative CRM platform.

Before diving into digital assets, Meilich worked as an analyst at Charles River Ventures, a well-known venture capital firm in Silicon Valley. This experience in evaluating companies and technology gave him the perspective needed to recognize the potential of the decentralized metaverse, making him a crucial figure during Decentraland’s initial stages.

Esteban Ordano: The Technological Vision Driving the Project

Esteban Ordano, who served as Decentraland’s chief technology officer, brings deep technical expertise to the project. His career in cryptocurrencies is extensive and diverse: he started as a software engineer at BitPay, Inc., one of the first Bitcoin payment processors, and later advised Matic Network, applying his expertise in scalability solutions.

Ordano’s contribution to blockchain infrastructure is especially notable through his co-founding of Zeppelin Solutions, a blockchain technology company that has become a sector leader. He also briefly ran his own startup focused on smart contract development, demonstrating his profound understanding of the technical architecture needed for decentralized projects.

From Leaders to Advisors: The Legacy of the Co-founders

Although Ariel Meilich and Esteban Ordano no longer lead Decentraland operationally, their influence remains on the platform. The creation of the Decentraland Foundation established a governance structure that continues to drive the project’s development with a decentralized vision.

Their transition from executive roles to advisory positions reflects a model of moving toward project self-sufficiency, allowing the community and new leaders to uphold the core values that Ariel Meilich and the Decentraland team established from the beginning.
