Three-house problem solution

Why did the main players yesterday, knowing that the three-house convertible bonds had such a high negative premium and there might be many conversions, still push the stock to a limit-up? Then today, funds pushed it higher at the open, causing convertible holders to sell off. Are the main players just kind-hearted helpers?
