Two Ten-Mile Silver Beaches
One is Poly Silver Beach on Hailing Island, Yangjiang, Guangdong, and the other is Country Garden Silver Beach on Hailing Island, Huizhou, Guangdong. As the names suggest, these are two tourism real estate projects developed by different real estate companies.
A few days before the Spring Festival, I left Hainan Island and went to Hailing Island, Yangjiang, Guangdong. Hailing Island is about thirty kilometers from downtown Yangjiang. The map shows it as an island, but in reality, there is a seawall connecting it to the mainland. The seawall has a road, and on both sides are kilometers-long fish ponds. When driving to Hailing Island, it feels less like an island.
There are two large beaches on Hailing Island: Dajiao Beach and Poly Silver Beach. Dajiao Beach is a well-developed tourist spot with many nearby hotels and restaurants. Although there were quite a few visitors before the Spring Festival, it probably isn’t peak tourist season, as some restaurants were closed. To the west of Dajiao Beach is a fishing port, where local residents live. The streets are bustling with people.
Poly Silver Beach is on the east side of Hailing Island, accessible by crossing a mountain from Dajiao Beach. There are far fewer people here. There are very few residents, only some scattered villages. Tourists are also scarce, with only a few visitors at the Nanhai No. 1 shipwreck museum. Along Silver Beach, Poly has built a long row of houses that look sparsely inhabited. Online research shows these houses were built between 2011 and 2017, and the new homes have long been sold out. The first phase opened around 10,000 yuan per square meter in 2011, and the last phase in 2017 was about 8,000 yuan per square meter. Currently, second-hand prices for prime sea-view properties are around 8,000 to 10,000 yuan per square meter, while non-sea-view properties are around 7,000 yuan or more per square meter. I didn’t see any real estate agencies locally, and with few residents, it seems these second-hand properties are difficult to sell despite their prices.
