The US-Iran conflict has led to a significant increase in oil prices in the United States, which is also triggering a chain of political reactions within the country.

According to a poll conducted from March 12 to 16, about two-thirds (66%) of American respondents disapprove of how Trump is handling oil prices, with only 27% supporting his approach; similarly, 67% oppose Trump’s measures to address living costs, with only 26% in favor.

Overall, public approval of Trump’s economic management has decreased by 5 percentage points from last month (from 37% to 32%), while disapproval has risen by 4 points (from 57% to 61%).

This is the lowest support for Trump’s economic policies during his two terms as president, even lower than during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in his first term.

What does the poll mean?

US polling trends often serve as a reference for upcoming elections, and this November, the US Congress will hold midterm elections, reshuffling the Senate and House of Representatives. The results will directly influence Trump’s policy influence over the next two years.

However, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining closed, international oil prices are likely to stay high for an extended period, leading to elevated US oil prices and severely undermining public confidence in the government.

If the Trump administration cannot quickly resolve the oil price issue and control its impact, the Republican Party may lose its majority in Congress. In the worst case, Trump could become a “lame duck” president.

The Trump administration has tried various measures to address this issue, such as lifting sanctions on some Russian oil to increase supply; targeting Iran’s 30 tugboats; and calling on US allies to send warships to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. But these efforts have had limited effect.

Polls show that 80% of respondents believe gasoline prices are too high, 67% expect oil prices to rise further in the coming months, and 45% of Americans think gasoline prices will increase significantly. Even among Republicans, about 45% believe prices will rise, compared to 40% who think they will fall.

Among Americans who believe oil prices will rise, 60% blame Trump the most, far higher than those who blame Iran (13%) or oil companies (12%).
