Additionally, Musk stated that the performance of the AI5 chip will far exceed its size, as Tesla’s entire AI software stack is designed to maximize the utilization of each circuit, indicating joint certification of its AI software and hardware. He also mentioned that while the AI5 chip can be used for data center training, its main focus is on optimizing AI edge computing for applications like Optimus and Robotaxi.
Musk said that there is still significant room for improvement in AI5, believing that under the same lithography and process node, a single AI6 chip could potentially match the performance of dual SoC AI5 chips.
In January, Musk stated that the design work for Tesla’s AI5 chip used for fully autonomous driving is nearly complete, and the company is in the early stages of developing the next-generation AI6. Tesla aims for future chip iterations to adopt a nine-month design cycle.
