Setting New Historical Records! 2026 Spring Festival Travel Season Expected to See 9.4 Billion Cross-Regional Personnel Movements

On March 13th, the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush officially concluded. According to the Ministry of Transport, during the 40 days, the total cross-regional passenger flow across society is expected to reach 9.4 billion trips, with an average of 235 million trips per day, a 4.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025, setting a new record high.

Railway passenger volume totaled 538 million trips, with an average of 13.44 million trips per day, a 4.8% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Road transportation (including highway and non-operational passenger trips on national and provincial roads, as well as commercial road passenger transport) totaled 8.736 billion trips, with an average of 218 million trips per day, a 4.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Among these, commercial road passenger transport totaled 1.281 billion trips, with an average of 32.03 million trips per day, a 5.0% increase; non-operational passenger trips on highways and national and provincial roads totaled 7.455 billion trips, with an average of 186 million trips per day, a 4.0% increase.

Waterway passenger volume reached 35.95 million trips, with an average of 900,000 trips per day, a 15.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Civil aviation passenger volume totaled 94.39 million trips, with an average of 2.36 million trips per day, a 4.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

During the Spring Festival travel period, the peak daily cross-regional passenger flow was on February 22nd (the sixth day of the Lunar New Year), reaching 380 million trips, setting a new record. The highest single-day railway passenger volume was on February 23rd (the seventh day of the Lunar New Year), with 18.73 million trips; the highest single-day road passenger flow was on February 22nd, with 358 million trips; the highest single-day waterway passenger volume was on February 20th (the fourth day of the Lunar New Year), with 2.03 million trips; and the highest single-day civil aviation passenger volume was on February 23rd, with 2.67 million trips.
