A Brief History of AI Evolution: From Writing Code to Feeding Data, Humans Become "Breeders"
Human control over AI has undergone three complete transformations:
First, writing code. Second, teaching rules. Third, just feeding data and electricity, then waiting for capabilities to "emerge."
Hundreds of billions of parameters just to predict the next word. Get it right and it seems thoughtful, get it wrong and it talks nonsense with a straight face.
AI's intelligence has never been about soul, but rather finding patterns in data on its own, without anyone teaching it step-by-step what to do.
Early AI followed the "expert systems" path: humans wrote knowledge as countless if-then rules and fed them into machines.
Reality was too complex, rules couldn't be written completely, tacit knowledge couldn't be encoded—this path hit a dead end.
Then it shifted to mimicking the brain: neural networks + deep learning.
The deeper the layers, the finer the features extracted: edges → shapes → components → wholes, with backpropagation constantly correcting weights.
In 2012, data and computing power exploded, and deep learning officially crushed traditional methods.
In 2017, Transformer appeared, ushering in the era of large models.
Doing one thing: predicting the next word.
When scale broke through the critical point, capabilities suddenly emerged—writing poetry, translation, coding—no one taught it, yet it learned on its own.
The essence of AI:
Ultra-large models + massive data + brute-force computing power = next-word predictor
From specialist models to a generalist solving all problems.
Human roles have completely changed too:
Rule writer → data trainer → computing power and data provider
Constantly relinquishing control, intelligence grows naturally.
Emergence depends on scale, scale depends on computing power, computing power depends on chips.
The next war has already begun on the chip battlefield.
