Deep Tide TechFlow News, March 18 — Microsoft is considering legal action against Amazon and OpenAI over a $50 billion deal that may violate its exclusive cloud partnership agreement with OpenAI, potentially sparking a conflict between the two tech giants.

The dispute centers on whether Amazon Web Services (AWS) can offer OpenAI’s new commercial product, Frontier, without breaching a long-term agreement. The deal requires all access to the company’s models to go through Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. Amazon and OpenAI say they are building a system to bypass the agreement. Sources reveal that Microsoft executives have objected, saying the approach is unfeasible and, even if it doesn’t violate the letter of the agreement, it breaches its spirit.

This legal threat highlights broader disagreements between Microsoft and OpenAI. If the dispute goes to court, OpenAI’s plans for an IPO as early as this year could be hindered. Despite completing a $110 billion funding round last month, the company still needs more cash to cover the massive computing resources required to train and operate large language models. (Jin10)
