Konstantin Ignatov Released: Conclusion of OneCoin Scheme Conviction
After spending 34 months behind bars for her role in managing the fraudulent OneCoin scheme, Konstantin Ignatov was released from prison on March 5. Federal Judge Edgardo Ramos’s decision marks a turning point in one of the biggest cryptocurrency fraud scandals in history, involving billions of dollars in consumer funds.
Ignatov, brother of the controversial “queen of cryptocurrencies” Ruja Ignatova, completed his prison sentence after pleading guilty to facilitating the international fraud scheme. Judge Ramos also ordered supervised release for two years and the confiscation of $118,000.
From accomplice to leader: Ignatov’s role in the fraud
Konstantin Ignatov initially joined the OneCoin project as his sister’s personal assistant during the peak of the fraudulent activity, from Q4 2014 to Q3 2016. After Ruja’s disappearance in 2017, Ignatov took control of the scheme, becoming the “de facto leader” according to prosecutors.
During the legal proceedings, Ignatov admitted to lying about disposing of his laptop in Las Vegas during a previous case hearing. He also provided crucial testimony against Mark Scott, former lawyer for OneCoin, revealing how Scott laundered $400 million from the fraud proceeds.
Sentences in the OneCoin case: a landscape of convictions
The $4 billion fraudulent scheme led to severe sentences for its main architects. Mark Scott, facing money laundering charges, was sentenced to 10 years in January with an order to forfeit $392 million in seized assets. Karl Sebastian Greenwood, co-founder of OneCoin and close associate of Ruja Ignatova, received an even harsher sentence: 20 years in September. Greenwood personally amassed $300 million from the scheme, spending it on luxury travel, designer clothing, and high-end real estate.
Irina Dilkinska, OneCoin’s legal and compliance officer, pleaded guilty in November and faces up to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the fraudulent scheme.
The ongoing international search for Ruja Ignatova
Despite numerous convictions of her accomplices, Ruja Ignatova has been a fugitive since 2017. The FBI has listed her among the ten most wanted, but her disappearance remains one of the most intriguing mysteries in the cryptocurrency world. According to unconfirmed reports, a local drug lord may have killed her in 2018, though no concrete evidence has ever supported this theory.
