DeepSeek Makes Another Move? A Mysterious AI Model Sparks Global Developer Discussion
A mysterious free AI model with trillions of parameters suddenly went live, sparking renewed speculation about the upcoming release of DeepSeek V4.
According to Reuters on March 18, an AI model called “Hunter Alpha” was anonymously launched on the developer platform OpenRouter, attracting attention from the global developer community. The model did not disclose the developer’s identity, but based on its performance metrics and timing, market speculation suggests this may be a secret test by DeepSeek of its next-generation system before official release.
Hunter Alpha was released on March 11 as a “stealth model” and is currently available for free to developers. Testing shows that the system has a trillion parameters and a context window of up to one million tokens.
In the tests, the model claims to be “a Chinese AI model mainly trained in Chinese,” with a knowledge cutoff date of May 2025, consistent with DeepSeek’s existing models. However, when asked about its developer, it responded: “I only know my name, parameter size, and context length.”
OpenRouter has not disclosed the source of the model, and DeepSeek has not responded to requests for comment.
Performance Metrics Trigger Market Sensitivity
Hunter Alpha’s core indicators quickly became the focus of discussion.
Its parameter size reaches trillions, placing it among the most advanced models currently available. Additionally, the system claims a context window of one million tokens, far exceeding most commercial models, enabling it to handle longer texts and more complex tasks.
Engineer Nabil Haouam, who is building AI agent systems, said: “Hunter Alpha’s one million token context and reasoning ability, combined with free access, is very impressive.”
With high performance and zero-cost advantages, Hunter Alpha has rapidly gained popularity among developers. According to OpenRouter, as of Sunday, the model had processed over 160 billion tokens.
Data Cutoff and Reasoning Style Point to DeepSeek
Clues linking Hunter Alpha to DeepSeek mainly come from its underlying data characteristics and operational logic.
In media tests, the chatbot claimed to be “a Chinese AI model mainly trained in Chinese,” and revealed its training data cutoff date as May 2025. This timeline is exactly the same as the knowledge cutoff reported by DeepSeek’s own chatbot.
When asked about its developer, the system refused to answer. The chatbot responded: “I only know my name, parameter size, and context window length.”
On a technical level, some developers believe the way the model operates reveals its “lineage.” AI engineer Daniel Dewhurst, who analyzed the model after its release, said: “Chain-of-thought prompting might be the strongest signal. Its reasoning style is hard to hide and often reflects the training method.”
Dewhurst also noted that Hunter Alpha’s size and memory capacity align with the specifications rumored for DeepSeek V4 earlier this year. Multiple media outlets have reported that DeepSeek’s next-generation V4 model could be released as early as April.
Anonymous Release: Industry-Standard “Gray-Scale Testing” Mechanism
In the AI industry, releasing models anonymously to gather real feedback has become a common practice. Platforms like OpenRouter allow developers to send queries to dozens of AI models through a single interface, making it an ideal testing ground for new systems.
A notice on Hunter Alpha’s profile page confirms this. It states that all prompts and completions are “recorded by the provider and may be used to improve the model.”
This approach is not uncommon in the industry. For example, in February of this year, an anonymous model called Pony Alpha appeared on OpenRouter, and five days later, Chinese company Zhipu AI confirmed it was part of their GLM-5 system.
Despite many similarities, some developers remain cautious about concluding that Hunter Alpha is indeed DeepSeek V4. Independent AI benchmarking engineer Umur Ozkul said: “My analysis suggests Hunter Alpha may not be DeepSeek V4.” He pointed out differences in token-related behavior and architectural patterns compared to DeepSeek’s current systems.
However, Ozkul also acknowledged that given the timing and the features promoted, it is entirely understandable that the market links this model to DeepSeek.
