National Stadium "Bird's Nest" Creates Large-Scale Event Carbon Neutrality Demonstration Benchmark
China News Service Beijing, March 14 — The launch ceremony for carbon neutrality at the National Stadium (Bird’s Nest) large-scale event was held in Beijing today. At the event, the Beijing Green Exchange signed a cooperation agreement with the National Stadium for large-scale event carbon neutrality. The National Climate Strategy Center and Beijing Green Exchange issued cancellation certificates and carbon neutrality certificates to relevant entertainment companies, neutralizing the carbon emissions from the Bird’s Nest concert on March 14-15.
This event was jointly organized by the Beijing Green Exchange, the National Climate Strategy Center, and the National Stadium. Li Gao, a member of the Party Leadership Group and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, stated in his speech that the National Stadium, as the main venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, is not only a symbol of China’s sports development but also an important window to showcase China’s green and low-carbon development concepts to the world. Promoting carbon neutrality for all large-scale events at the Bird’s Nest throughout the year has significant demonstrative importance for advancing the construction of the voluntary greenhouse gas emission reduction trading market nationwide and establishing a green and low-carbon benchmark for society. It is hoped that the Bird’s Nest will play a leading role, actively practicing carbon neutrality according to guidelines, and providing replicable and promotable experience for large-scale events across the country. More event organizers are encouraged to use CCER (Certified Emission Reductions) to achieve carbon neutrality as a standard practice, making large-scale events important platforms for spreading green ideas and leading social trends. Society is urged to take this opportunity to jointly promote low-carbon concepts, gather efforts for green development, and push forward the goals of peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality.
To fully implement the “Opinions on Promoting Green and Low-Carbon Transformation and Strengthening the Construction of the National Carbon Market” issued by the General Office of the CPC Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment promotes the active use of the national voluntary greenhouse gas emission reduction trading market’s registered certified voluntary emission reductions (CCER) by government agencies, enterprises, and social organizations in areas such as green supply chain management, large-scale event organization, social responsibility fulfillment, and green low-carbon lifestyles to offset carbon emissions.
Certified voluntary emission reductions are high-quality voluntary carbon credits registered after quantifying and certifying the emission reduction effects of relevant projects. These reductions play an important role in motivating various market entities to reduce emissions, promoting green low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading, and helping achieve emission reduction targets. Guided by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Beijing municipal government, the “Bird’s Nest” is being promoted as a demonstration benchmark for large-scale cultural and sports event carbon neutrality, advocating low-carbon concepts, leading social trends, and gathering efforts for green development. At the launch ceremony, the Beijing Green Exchange signed a cooperation agreement with the National Stadium for large-scale event carbon neutrality. The National Climate Strategy Center and Beijing Green Exchange issued cancellation certificates and carbon neutrality certificates to relevant entertainment companies, neutralizing the carbon emissions from the Bird’s Nest concerts on March 14-15.
The event site also released the “Initiative for Implementing Large-Scale Event Carbon Neutrality,” where representatives jointly called on organizers and operators of large-scale events to clarify carbon neutrality goals, fulfill commitments with high quality, accept public and media supervision proactively, and practice green lifestyles together.
