In response to the U.S. government’s recent announcement of initiating new trade investigations against trade partners such as the European Union, the European Commission stated on the 12th that if the U.S. violates the previously agreed trade agreements, the EU will respond “firmly and proportionally.”

EU Commission spokesperson Oluf Gil told the media at a routine press conference that the EU will request the U.S. to clarify how initiating the Section 301 investigation will align with the agreements reached between the EU and the U.S. last year.

The EU and the U.S. reached a trade agreement in July 2025. The EU agreed to remove tariffs on U.S. industrial products and provide preferential market access for U.S. seafood and agricultural products in exchange for the U.S. imposing a 15% tariff on most EU exports to the U.S.
